Class Reunions

Class of 1984 – 30th Anniversary Reunion

Contributed by Agnes Sng '84

“I am glad to see your worships well….I thank you for my venison, Master Shallow…I am glad to see you: much good do it your good heart! … How doth good Mistress Page?—and I thank you always with my heart, la! with my heart.”- Shakespeare

Scene: Shaw Foundation Alumni House, 30th Anniversary Reunion for Class of ’84 on 14 March, 2014

Enter some 40 from the Class of ’84, a little greyer, and rounder, and our beloved professors of yore, Professors Leong Wai Kum, Lye Lin Heng, Tan Sook Yee, Robert Beckman, Bill Ricquier and Kim Seah and the Dean of Law Faculty, Professor Simon Chesterman, as well as Goh Mia Yang ’92 and Trina Gan ’04 from the faculty, who worked so hard to organise the reunion.

Thirty years later, and we know who some of us have become! We count among our classmates Minister for Law and Foreign Affairs K.Shanmugam, Registrar of Supreme Court Foo Chee Hock, Ambassador Lim Thuan Kuan, NMP Faizah Jamal and Prof Michael Hor, soon-to-be Dean of the University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law.

There are many more illustrious classmates in the public and private sectors, but alas, space constraints prevent me from naming them all. We exchanged stories of our salad days, when we were green in judgment, and our passage through the last 30 years. We were also delighted that our former professors came. Thank you for shaping (some say whipping and terrorising) us into who we are today. But what’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

“Good night, good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow

That I shall say good night till it be morrow.” -Shakespeare

But as with all reunions, it ended too quickly, and we had to leave. We trudged out of the restaurant, with promises to catch up.

“When shall we [all] meet again

In thunder, lightning, or in rain?” –Shakespeare

We shall meet again, at the next reunion! Thank you, Professor Chesterman, Mia Yang, Trina and the Faculty of Law for sponsoring the reunion.

Class of ’84 Bursary

Call for donations to help needy students

Dear classmates, we are converting our class grant (hitherto most diligently administered by Michael Seow, Richard Tan, Tan Lai Huat and Michael Hor) into a bursary to help needy students. We hope to top up the funds to at least $25,000 which will allow one award of $2,500 to be awarded to one student a year, for the next 10 years.

Last year, there were 90 applications for the 20 bursary awards available. A large number of the applicants came from families with a per capita monthly income of less than $1,500.

All gifts attract an income tax exemption of 2.5 times the amount of donations. A gift of $10,000 and more will also entitle the donor to have his/her name (or anyone else's if the gift is in honour of that person) inscribed on a Benefactors' Board at NUS Law.

All amounts of donation will be a meaningful contribution, so grateful thanks in advance! For more information please contact Trina Gan ’04, at
